First off I should say that I am a huge fan of Mexican food and am quite particular about where I go to get it. While El Maguey is nothing fancy it has quickly become one of my favorite local places for a quick bite. I first went to El Maguey about two years ago after Ted Scheffler (City Weekly) wrote a review about it. When I went in, sat down and ordered everything was just as I had imagined it would be. The food came out and initially I was a little disappointed because it looked so plain. However, once I began eating my mind changed very quickly. The flavors were awesome! The sauces (especially the green one) worked so well with the dish that I had forgotten that initial reaction. All I could think about is when can I make it down here next. The owners and staff are so nice. The communication was a little difficult but that was easy to work around. Yeah, maybe they could do a little extra cleaning in the diningroom but that was no big deal. My son managed to walk back into the kitchen so I had the opportunity to see what that looked like. As a former chef of 12 years I was surprised. I have seen many high end restaurants that are not as clean as El Maguey. Anyway, my point is that this place is totally unassuming, very welcoming and extremely friendly. Great food, great people and although I am moving out of the neighborhood I will most certainly be a regular customer. ps- try the fish tacos if you like that sort of thing. They're fantastic!

Not bad but not great either. The cabeza tacos I ordered were not quite as flavorful as some I've had and I typically get two corn tortillas on a taco while these each had one. Chips and home made salsa are complimentary with inside dining. The building looks new on the outside but inside it's kind of beat up and a bit grungy with a bunch of junk lining shelves that really just collects dust and doesn't add anything to the ambiance. It's a little more expensive than a cart, obviously to offset the rental cost. Maybe I'll try it again another time.

Excellent Street Tacos, with the ability to be inside an air conditioned / heated environment and sit down at a table. My wife loves the ceviche here and my father in-law always enjoyed the caldo (soup). Mix it up, take someone on their first date here they will be scared as heck as you journey into the dangerous part of town. You will be rewarded with a nice clean, safe place to eat. You will be doubly rewarded with good food from some good people. Previous reviewer says bring your best spanglish, that is good advice. Go figure real Mexicans make some excellent Mexican food. Tell them "El Guapo," sent you... This will mean nothing to them but it may make them laugh. You want all the food you ever eat to be made by someone with a happy and loving heart. Give it a shot let me know if it improves the food to a 5th star!

I've lived on the "west side" for 8 years. Before here, I lived in southern california. I know what real mexican food is. And this place has it. what it doesn't have, however, is good quality meat. Sure, I am basing this review on one visit, and I've had the same thing happen at taco carts before. The carne asada tacos tasted like the meat came from expired manager's special, and they still didn't taste completely cooked. The environment is nice, the place is clean, and the staff was friendly.... but if you want good carne asada tacos, go to El Rey De Oros down the street on 200S.

Do you love chimichangas? Then this place is NOT for you. This is more authentic mexican food. In fact, you may be the only gringo in this place. There's not a lot of English spoken here, but the food is worth it so bring your best Spanglish ("Can I have cheese-o on my burrito?") and your appetite. The chips are excellent (a key point for me in a mexican restaurant) and the green salsa they're served with is yummy. Enchiladas were delish, and so are the burritos. I've been told the carne asada is great as well.

Well they building was re-done 2 years ago so the inside is clean looking. My complaint was the floor could have been swept sometime that week. The enchiladas were great and the Shrimp soup was outstanding.. Service was friendly...

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
